Reimagining the future of clinical trials with the integration of AI holds immense potential to revolutionize drug development and medical research. AI has already shown its value in specialties that rely on pattern recognition and image interpretation, such as radiology, cardiology, pathology, neurology, dermatology, and ophthalmology. However, its adoption in clinical trial research has been relatively slow due to perceived conflicts between AI and human intelligence.

To overcome this friction and maximize the benefits of AI in clinical trials, it is essential to view AI as a tool to augment human intelligence rather than replacing it. The focus should be on creating AI-human collaborations, where AI supports and enhances human decision-making throughout the clinical trial process.

Standardized and transparent reporting for clinical trials involving AI is crucial. Guidelines like SPIRIT-AI (Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials–Artificial Intelligence) and CONSORT-AI (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials–Artificial Intelligence) extensions have been introduced to achieve this goal, ensuring consistent and reliable reporting of AI-related trial protocols and publications.

The potential of AI to improve clinical trial conduct is significant. In areas like oncology and…
